What country did Japan seize in 1931 and why?
This question came to mind when Japan attacked Manchuria and what I find interesting to look at.
On September 18, 1931, the Japanese invaded Manchuria because the Japanese population increased and Japan itself started to become crowded. Manchuria had at least 200,000 square kilometers worth of land which was good for the Japanese because that will easily help make the Japanese Empire. The other reason why Japan seized Manchuria was because they needed to some war supplies and also to avoid a two-front war. This is how the Japanese attacked Manchuria "in the late November 1931, General Honjo sent away 10,000 soldiers in 13 armored train cars."(History Learning 1) They were escorted by squadron bombers. This was happening during the Southern part of Manchuria. The operation was canceled Japanese War Minister General Jiro Minami because of the acceptance of minor changes in the League of Nations proposal for a "neutral zone" to be thoroughly recognized. However, the two sides failed to reach a lasting agreement. "This current prime minister was replaced by Prime Minister Inukai Tsuyoshi because their government failed. '(History Learning 1)This Prime Minister succeeded in recreated a new government that will help them. On December 28, a new government was formed in China, after all, the member of the old government resigned. This threw the military command into turmoil, and the Chinese army retreated to the south of the Great Wall. "The following day the Japanese was occupied Shanhaiguan because it was to complete their military on taking over the south side."(History Learning 1) Then the Japanese finished on the south side of Manchuria and now they are turning to the north side. With negotiations with General Ma Nanshan and Ting Chao to defect the pro-Japanese side failed. The reason why they did these tactics to invade the Manchuria because they needed to supply Japanese manufacturing industry. While the U.S was struggling with the Great Depression until the end of 1930's. This happened partly because of war and Japan emerged from its own time period of depression. Their "Great Depression" started in 1926 and till the mid-1930's. Many of the young soldiers mobilized into the Japanese army by the early 1930's. "Their commitment to the military effort to expand the Japanese territory to achieve economic security can be understood partly in these terms. The depression ended in the mid-1930s in Japan partly because of government deficits used to expand greatly both heavy industry and the military."( World War 2 1) Internationally, during this time it was a time when "free trade" was in disrepute. The government not only jealously protected their economic rights within their colonies. " influence, but sought to bolster their sagging economies through high tariffs, dumping of goods and other trade manipulation. The Japanese, with few natural resources, sought to copy this pattern. They used cutthroat trade practices to sell textiles and other light industrial goods in the East Asian and U.S. markets."(World War 2 1) The undercutting from the British and the French manufacturers and they also developed resources of raw material. They also developed these raw and heavy material in the colonies they confirmed like Koria, Taiwan, and Manchuria. "Japan used high tariffs to limit imports of American and European industrial products."(World War 2 1) The Japanese military faced a particular tactical problem that certain critical raw materials like oil and rubber weren't available within the Japanese influence. Instead, Japan received most of its oil from the U.S and their rubber from British Malaya.
