In June 1941, Hitler began on Operation Barbarossa which was the conquest of the Soviet Union. During this operation, Hitler unleashed a new blitzkrieg "lighting war." There were about three million German's that poured into the Soviet Union. "The German's caught Stalin unprepared and his army was still suffering from the purges that wiped out many of its top officers."(Operation Barbarossa 1)The Russians lost two and a half million soldiers trying to fight off the intruders. The Russians were forced back, the Russian troops destroyed factories, farm equipment and burned crops to keep the Germans out of the enemy's hands. At 4:15 a.m. on June 22, 1941 the Luftwaffe began to bomb the Soviet naval base and air bases, destroying roughly about one-quarter of the Russian air force. "Before the Russians had time to react, the German army began its three-pronged attack across the nearly thousand-mile front. Within a week, Hitler’s allies had also declared war, leaving the Soviet Union alone to fight Germany, Romania, Italy, Finland, Hungary, and Albania"(Operation Barbarossa 1) The Germans and the Russians with more than three million soldiers. Germany had 3,000 tanks, 2,500 aircraft, 7,000 artillery pieces, 600,000 motor vehicles and 625,000 horses. "The Romanian army contributed 250,000 men and the Finns 500,000. Initially, the Soviets had 2,500,000 men and another 2,200,000 in reserve to defend Moscow and other key cities."(Operation Barbarossa 1) The Red army had more tanks and planes than their enemies. But with an exception as many tanks that they had and the amount of equipment was no longer in use or the equipment is in lower use.

For the first phase of Operation Barbarossa, the German army was to occupy the main Soviet force was close to the Russian border as possible and destroy it before the Red Army could withdraw very large interior and establish a defensive position. The second phase was aimed at establishing a front along the north to the t south line running from the Volga River to the Archangel. "German forces were to be divided into three strike forces, one which would attack north, in the direction of Leningrad, a second in the south would move against Kiev, and the center force would be directed toward Smolensk, with Moscow as its ultimate target." (Operation Barbarossa 1) This was Hitlers idea to attack the Soviet Union and a few people dared challenged him for the Fuhrer's judgment. But Admiral Erich Raeder the navy commander in chief, had warned Hitler it was a bad idea to take on the Russians before finishing the British. Erich offered Hitler more plans, but Raeder could not convince Hitler from his dreams for colonizing Russia and for their resources. "He entered into a new agreement with Molotov on January 10, 1941, in which the Soviets offered economic concessions to the Germans. It was all more ironic because Hitler had refused to respond to the Soviet request to join the Tripartite Pact."(Operation Barbarossa 1) Hitler's original plan was called for the Invasion for Russia that would begin on May 15, there were many problems that needed to rescue Musslini's forces in Africa. Also to rescue Musslini's forces in Mediterranean which they forced a postponement. "Richard Sorge, his spy in Tokyo, who had access to the German ambassador’s messages, sent word of the date of the invasion."(Operation Barbarossa 1) The British and the Americans passed on many warnings and details about the German troop movement. Stalin couldn't be persuaded that Hitler would turn on him and not provide an excuse to do so. The German code name for this invasion was the USSR. Before this operation started Hitler signed a non-aggression treaty with Stalin. This treaty was designed to provide to the "The territory of a German empire" or also known as the Reich. "The German dictator had advocated the conquest of the USSR as early as 1924 in his book, Mein Kampf. At the same time, the campaign was to lay the foundations for the expected conflict with the two Anglo-Saxon powers for primacy as a world power and to free Germany of the economic warfare the Allies were waging against it."(Barbarossa Timeline 1) These orders were disregarding the international law, such as the order to execute all the Red Army political commissars. The'Barbarossa Decree' which to grant freedom to the German soldiers from prosecution if they committed a crime toward any Soviet citizen, meant a departure from the traditional military conduct for the Wehrmacht(The German armed Forces from 1935 to 1945). On June 22, 1941, when Operation Barbarossa begins a German army group heads towards north(Wilhelm Ritter von Leeb), also an army group heads towards center(Feodor Von Bock), and then towards the south(Gerd von Rundstedt)." June 24 – 30 1941 Army Group Centre seals off Soviet resistance into pockets at Bialystok, Novogrudok and Volkovysk"(Operation Barbarossa 1) The majority were fiercely anti-communist and feared to provide equipment and arms to the Russians would reduce the amount available to the British. Also, the public was equally if not more opposed to the Nazis and wanted to see them defeated".From March 1941 until October 1945, the United States provided the Russians with 15,000 aircraft, 7,000 tanks, 350,000 tons of explosives, 51,000 jeeps, 375,000 trucks, 2,000 locomotives, 11,000 rail wagons, 3 million tons of gasoline, and 15 million pairs of boots. Britain contributed another 5,000 tanks and 7,000 aircraft."(Operation Barbarossa 1) No one new but this great strength struggle between Hitler and Joe would become key to the outcome for the whole entire war.

During this operation there was a failure of German troops to defeat Soviet forces in the campaign signaled a crucial turning point in the war. Hitler congratulated himself for the German-Soviet Nonaggression Act in 1939. For the fallowing the Soviet occupation of the Baltic states, Bessarabia, and the northern Bukovina in June of 1940. "which put Soviet forces in proximity to the Romanian oil fields on which Germany depended, Hitler’s long-standing interest in overthrowing the Soviet regime was heightened."(Operation Barbarossa 1) Hitler became unpleasantly suspicious from the intentions from the Joseph Stalin and he began to feel that he couldn't afford to wait to complete the subjugation of Western Europe, as he originally planned, before attacking the Soviet Union. Hitler and his fellow generals had originally planned to schedule and invasion for the Soviet Union in mid-May of 1941. But unpredicted of the fact of being required for invading Yugoslavia and in Greece in April in that same year. But they had to postpone the Soviet campaign until late June. "The army commander in chief, Walther von Brauchitsch, and the army general staff chief, Franz Halder—were convinced that the Red Army could be defeated in two or three months and that by the end of October the Germans would have conquered the whole European part."(Operation Barbarossa 1) The west line of Russia and Ukraine was stretching from Archangel to Astrakhan. This is how Hitler renamed this operation after the Roman Emperor Fredrick Barbarossa when he was resigned. A greater hindrance for Hitler's chance of victory was that the German intelligence service which underestimated the troops disposing of that Stalin would bring up their depths. But the Germans estimated correctly and that made them about 150 division in the western areas. "He Germans succeeded in shattering the original Soviet armies by superior technique, they then found their path blocked by fresh ones. The effects of the miscalculations were increased because much of August was wasted while Hitler and his advisers were having long arguments as to what course they should follow after their initial victories."(Operation Barbarossa 1)The other factor was that the Germans for the amount of troops that they have weren't miscalculated.
